Mission
SIERRA aims to accelerate the decarbonisation of heavy-duty vehicles by developing a new generation of safe, sustainable, lightweight, and high-performance Ni-rich NMC battery packs.
Through cutting-edge materials, advanced monitoring systems, and smart integration, the project will deliver a scalable and eco-friendly solution ready for industrial deployment in electric buses and other heavy-duty vehicles.

Key Objectives
SIERRA focuses on a set of technological and non-technological objectives designed to drive innovation, enhance safety, and ensure the sustainability of next-generation battery packs for heavy-duty electric vehicles.
Technological Objectives
01
Develop multi-scale modelling for the design of safe, sustainable, and lightweight battery packs.
02
Implement one-shot manufacturing of multimaterial casings using reused and recycled carbon fibre.
03
Integrate advanced monitoring for SHM, SoC, SoH, and thermal mapping through a wireless BMS architecture.
04
Design an integrated cooling system and printed busbars to enhance heat management, safety, and fast-charging performance.
05
Assemble and validate the SIERRA battery pack at TRL6 for electric buses.
Non-Technical Objectives
Demonstrate sustainability in line with the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework.
01
Define exploitation strategies and a roadmap towards TRL9 and market uptake.
02
Maximise dissemination, communication, and stakeholder engagement to ensure real-world impact and adoption.
03
Our Innovations

Our Impact
By 2034, SIERRA battery packs are expected to generate €87 million in revenue and create over 500 new jobs, contributing to Europe’s leadership in clean mobility and sustainable battery manufacturing.
The project also aims to achieve 13 Key Exploitable Results (KERs) and 8 patents, ensuring a lasting impact on the EU battery value chain.
